Stairlift Details

OUR STAIRLIFT PRODUCTS:

When you are starting to find it difficult going up and down your stairs it is time to consider the advantages of having a stairlift installed:

  1. They provides a safe means of moving freely about your home.
  2. Remove the chore of moving up and down stairs to the bathroom.
  3. Give you a greater degree of independence.
  4. Allows you to stay in your home much longer.

Types of stairlift available:

Straight Stair Lifts – These lifts can be fitted to the majority of stairs that have a straight flight between first step and landing.  They are cheap relative to curved lifts and can be installed within 2 – 3 days of date of order.   There is a wide variety of models available to choose from compared with curved stairlifts.

Curved Stair Lifts – These lifts are fitted on stairs with one or more turns.  They are custom built for your particular stairs and therefore take a lot longer to supply – 3 – 4 weeks from the date of order.

Perch Stairlifts – Are often the preferred choice of customers who have difficulty bending their knees to sit.  The seat is smaller and positioned higher up than a standard stairlift allowing the user to perch rather than fully sit.  The perch stairlift is often chosen by customers with arthritis in the knees or hips and find sitting uncomfortable.

Outdoor Stairlifts – Have all the features of indoor stairlifts but they are obviously waterproof and can withstand extremes of heat and cold.  Metal components are zinc coated, oil annealed or made of aluminium.  Seats and plastic components are highly resilient to the effects of heat and UV rays.  Protective covers come as standard while not in use.  Outdoor stairlifts are used for negotiating steps to and from your property and for access to basements.

Some frequently asked questions:

What is a stairlift ?

A stairlift is an electrically powered lifting device that allows people assend and decend stairs more easily.   It is equipped with either a platform or a chair depending on your particular needs.  It moves along a rail which is securely fixed to your stairs and a motor pulls the stairlift up and down the track.

How is the motor powered ?

The motor is powered by battery which is automatically and continually charged.  It is very quite and smooth.  The battery power allows your stairlift to operate at all times so power outages are not a concern.

How is the Battery recharged ?

The battery is charged by means of an electrical charger which operates similarly to a mobile phone charger –  however the charger is always plugged in so that your stairlift battery is fully charged at all times.  If you do not have an electrical socket close to your stairs we will install one for you.  The stairlift will have a charging point at the top and bottom of the stairs.  Some models have the advantage of a continuous charging strip along the travel rail which eliminates the need for the lift to be fully up stairs or down stairs to charge.

How long does it take to fit ?

Typically a straight stairlift can be fitted in 2 – 3 hours.  A curved stairlift can take up to a day depending on the complexity of the stairs.

Will my stairlift come with a warranty ?

All our stairlifts come with a 12 month comprehensive warranty package.

What weight can a stairlift carry ?

The weight carrying capacity will vary depending on the model chosen.  Most models will safely carry 18 stone which is 120 KG.  There are a number of heavy duty models that can carry up to 28 stone or 187 KG.

Are they easy to operate ?

Stairlifts are very easy to operate.  They are controlled by a small toggle or joystick suitated on the armrest.  To move up or down the stairs you simply move the toggle or joystick.  The stairlift should also come with two remote controls  which are very useful if there are two people using the stairlift in the house.   If one user has gone down stairs the other user simply presses the remote control and the stairlift comes back up the stairs for them to use.

How safe are they ?

All modern stairlifts have to meet very high safety standards under EU directive 2006/42/EU.  Features such as obstruction detection and lockable on/off switch come as standard.  Other safety features include mechanical and electrical breaking systems.

Will my stairs be usable by other occupants in the house ?

Yes – Your stairlift is designed with a fold up seat and footrest when not in use and will not hinder normal use of the stairs.

Are they expensive to run ?

No – Typical running costs would be similar to boiling a kettle.

Are they noisy ?

No – They run on battery power which is DC current and is very quite and smooth.

How much do they cost ?

A standard straight stairlift cost approximately € 1,800 for supply and fix.   We always have a supply in stock and we can fit within 2 – 3 days of order.  Curved stairlifts have to be made to measure and can cost approximately € 4,000 – € 5,000 depending on complexity and can take 3 – 4 weeks from date of order to manufacture and fit.  The number of extra features you choose such as power swivel seats will effect price.  The above price are indicative and are exclusive of VAT which you can usually claim back from the revenue.

Are there grants available ?

Yes – Stairlifts are covered under the Home Adaptation Grant Scheme  – Contact your local County Council for further details.  See also information we provided under our Grants section.
